The book we introduced last week and revealed this week is Chrysanthemum.

Chrysanthemum loves her name. Her parents gave her the best name. She loves her name until she starts school. The students in her class think her name is funny and make fun of her, suddenly she doesn’t think her name is so great, until they go to music class and the cool music teacher has a flower name too. Now everyone wants a flower name! The music teacher is going to have a baby, and guess what she plans to name her baby? A wonderful story about how words can hurt or heal, and each of us is unique. Chrysanthemum is written by Kevin Henkes and published by Mulberry Books. Recommended for children ages 4-8.

Where is Mrs. Pilcher?

For our next book, what can be more fun than to build your town! It was just a hill with sand, rocks, some wooden boxes, and cacti, but with a little imagination and some work it became their town! It had a mayor and even a jail. This was an actual place and the author’s mother actually helped build this “town.” What is the title of this book? The author is Alice McLerran and the illustrator is Barbara Cooney. The book was published by HarperCollins and is recommended for children ages 4-8.

What a Name? Episode 34

Have you ever heard of a dog having three names?

Our book this time is titled “Three Names.”

“Three Names” is a story told from a boy’s perspective about his great-grandfather and a stray dog that showed up at the farm and became a part of the family. Three Names loves to take part of the daily farm life, too, but he especially loves to go to school. When school is out for the summer, he’s a little sad that they don’t get to go school. A wonderful story about a boy and his dog! Three Names was written by Patricia MacLachlan, and illustrated by Alexander Pertzoff. It was published by Charlotte Zolotow Books (an imprint of HarperCollins Publications), c1991.

Our next book is about a little girl with an unusual name; it’s actually the name of a flower. She loves her name until she goes to school. The other children think her name is weird and she’s not so sure about liking her name anymore. But then the cool music teacher has a flower name as well, suddenly her name is wonderful. This book was written by Kevin Henkes, published by Greenwillow Press, c1991.

Have you ever dreamed of being a cowboy? Charlie always dreamed of being a cowboy. He listened to stories of the West and famous cowboys, and then would draw them. As he grew older, his dream stayed with him. When he was 15 his parents let him go West with a family friend. Charlie had found his home. He lived in the West the rest of his life, eventually working as a cowboy, but then the West changed, and he found his true calling — an artist. His paintings and sculptures are still on exhibit around the country today. This biographical book was written by Jeanette Winter.

Episode 30 Mountains in Kansas? “Owl Moon”

Where is Mrs. Pilcher? Did you guess last times book was Owl Moon? This weeks book is about a little boy and his dad who go on an adventure. Did you know Kansas has mountains? Well, not your typical mountains, but mountains filled with wheat. This boy and his dad climb to the top of the mountain and the fields look like the table cloth on the kitchen table at home with the road acting as the ribbon holding it all together. The boy and his dad share a special time together that only the two of them know what is meant when they say it’s time to climb a Kansas mountain. This is an adventure the little girl has looked forward to for a long time. When they do this activity they have to be very quiet. There is a noctural animal involved. Any guesses? Our story this time is a a biography about a man who spends his whole life being the first to photograph snowflakes. You can still go to his hometown of Jericho, Vermont and see a plaque in the town center and information about him at the local historical society. Any idea who this man is? It received a Caldecott Medal. It was written by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Mary Azarian.

Where is Mrs. Pilcher? The book this time is about a woodcarver, the best woodcarver in the valley, but he is a sad man until a little boy gradually softens his heart. Published by Candlewick Press, and written by Susan Wojciechowaski for ages 6-9. Can you guess this book? The book last time was “Cranberry Thanksgiving.” A wonderful story about living on a cranberry bog and Grandma’s famous cranberry bread recipe. The recipe is included in the book and is delicious. Last time the book was “A New Coat for Anna.” A wonderful story of a community working together to provide a coat for a little girl. The sheep play a big part in providing the wool for the coat.
